Terms
The agreement between you and chalk: your account, your plan, what you can do with chalk, and what we promise in return.
Who you are agreeing with
chalk is run by the founders of chalk. By making an account or using chalk, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy policy.
Your account
- You need to be 13 or older. Younger learners use chalk only through a parent’s or teacher’s account, with that adult.
- Use your own email, and keep access to it: it is how you sign in.
- You are responsible for what happens in your account. Tell us at once if you think someone else is using it.
Plans, credits and payment
- The free trial is a one-time amount of credits. When it is used, it stops; nothing you made is taken away.
- Paid plans give you a number of credits each week (Unlimited has a fair-use ceiling instead). Credits reset every Monday and do not roll over. Each plan’s page says what it includes.
- Billing. Plans are paid monthly or yearly through Stripe and renew automatically until you cancel. Prices are shown before you pay.
- Cancelling. You can cancel any time in Settings › Plan & usage › Manage billing. Your plan then runs to the end of the period you paid for and does not renew.
- Changing plan takes effect straight away; Stripe adjusts the price for the time left.
- Price changes never apply to a period you have already paid for, and we tell you before they apply.
- Something wrong with a charge? Write to hello@trychalk.tech and we will put it right. Nothing here takes away rights you have under consumer law.
- Promo codes give a plan for a set time. They are personal: one use per person, not for sale, and they may have an end date or a limited number of uses.
What you make is yours
You own what you put into chalk and what chalk makes for you. You give us permission to store it, process it and send it to the services that run chalk, only to provide chalk to you. When you share a link, anyone with it can view that one thing until you stop sharing.
Only upload and ask about things you have the right to use. When you ask about your screen, chalk sees what is on it — so be careful with other people’s private information.
Using chalk well
Please don’t:
- use chalk for anything illegal, harmful, or meant to deceive;
- hand in chalk’s work as your own where your school or course does not allow it — chalk is built to teach you and help you with your work;
- try to get around credits or plan limits, share your account, or resell chalk;
- try to break, overload, copy or take apart chalk, or reach other people’s work;
- use chalk to make content that harms or harasses others.
If you do, we may pause or close your account. We will tell you why, unless the law or safety stops us.
The Mac app
chalk on the Mac asks for permission to see your screen, use your microphone, and use accessibility so it can point at things. It only listens while you hold ⌘⌥. It can offer to do things on your screen — press a button, type into a field, open a link — but it never does them until you tap, click or say yes, and it never sends, pays or deletes anything for you.
AI can be wrong
chalk’s answers, boards and courses are made by AI. We check facts on boards before walking you through them, but mistakes still happen. chalk is for learning; it is not professional advice — medical, legal, financial or otherwise. Check anything important with a trusted source.
Our part
- chalk’s software, design, characters and name are ours. You may use them only to use chalk.
- We work to keep chalk running and your work safe, but we can’t promise it will never be down or never lose anything. Keep copies of what really matters.
- We may change or remove features. If we stop chalk altogether, we will give you notice, time to take a copy of your work, and a fair refund for time you paid for and could not use.
Limits on what we are responsible for
chalk is provided as it is. As far as the law allows, we are not responsible for losses that come from relying on an AI answer, from things outside our control, or that we could not have foreseen; and our total responsibility to you is limited to what you paid us in the twelve months before the problem. None of this limits responsibility that the law does not allow us to limit.
Ending
You can stop using chalk and ask us to close your account at any time. We may close an account that breaks these terms. Either way, we delete your account data as our Privacy policy says.
Changes to these terms
We will update the date at the top when these terms change. If a change matters, we will tell you by email or in the app before it applies. If you keep using chalk after that, you agree to the new terms; if you don’t agree, you can cancel and close your account.
